Autumn and spring teaching
In this module, you’ll explore a social work topic of your choice.
You’ll research through private study, with small discussion groups and one-to-one guidance. You’ll link theory and practice, developing research skills through planning, conducting and writing your project.
Topics include:
- creating research questions and planning a project on a topic of your choice
- reviewing relevant literature and research evidence
- applying and reviewing research methodologies, methods and ethics
- analysing and displaying findings into a critical report
- drawing conclusions from research findings, identifying their relevance to modern practice or theory
- making links between theory and practice and using research mindedness in relation to practice
- applying research mindedness, knowledge and skills of critical appraisal, as readers and writers of social work research
- developing, planning, conducting and writing-up an informed, ethical and well-argued piece of literature-based research.

Contact hours and workload
This module is approximately 450 hours of work. This breaks down into about 16 hours of contact time and about 434 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.
We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We鈥檙e planning to run these modules in the academic year 2025/26. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum.
