Summer teaching

In this module, you’ll complete a 10,000 word dissertation on an environment, development and policy topic of your choice.

You’ll receive expert supervision and can choose to use desk-based research with secondary sources, or conduct fieldwork and collect primary data.

In preparation, you’ll take a workshop to learn skills such as:

  • research methods
  • dissertation planning
  • dissertation writing
  • preparing a research outline.

Through one-to-ones, your supervisor will help you plan your research, develop your project and guide your independent work.

Contact hours and workload

This module is approximately 450 hours of work. This breaks down into about 2 hours of contact time and about 448 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.

We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We鈥檙e planning to run these modules in the academic year 2025/26. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum.
