On this module, you’ll analyse the structure and norms of governance in the Federal Republic of Germany.
You’ll explore:
- the structure of German governance after 1945
- the formal and codified arrangements of German federalism
- the relationship between the constitution, political parties and wider polity.
You’ll also investigate Germany's role within the international community. This includes examining how unification reshaped Germany's structures and governance practices.
You’ll study two particular fields - asylum and immigration policy, and foreign policy. This will help illustrate how structures of governance shape policy making and development.
Module learning outcomes
- Design and produce a substantial work of analysis and argument, presented in accordance with professional scholarly standards
- Access primary and secondary materials through the use of extensive IT skills and be able to use appropriate software packages
- Critically evaluate the efficacy and efficiency of Germany's institutions and norms of governance.
- Understand and critically analyse the impact that unification has had on the way that Germany is governed today
