Foundations of Canadian Law (M3040)

Spring teaching
On this module, you’ll learn about:
- the structure of the Canadian government
- the different functions of Parliament – the executive and the judiciary.
You’ll explore the powers of judicial review and the different constitutional constraints on the exercise of judicial, legal and political power in Canada.
In addition to this, you’ll:
- learn how to interpret statutes using the modern and dynamic approach to statutory interpretation
- analyse complex social and legal issues
- use different theoretical lenses including critical legal theory, law and economics and critical race theory.
We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We鈥檙e planning to run these modules in the academic year 2026/27. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum.
