Crime and the Media (Aut) (L3020A)

15 credits, Level 5

Autumn teaching

This module takes a cultural view of media representations of crime, examining the influence of crime on popular culture and everyday life including:

  • advertising
  • documentaries
  • television news
  • social media.

You’ll examine relationships between:

  • instances of crime
  • media about crime
  • political reactions to crime
  • public opinion about crime.

You’ll focus on the latter to explore how crime media causes reactionary and resentful responses to ‘criminals’, while also exploiting crime themes for entertainment and consumption.

Finally, you’ll consider how far media influences public opinion about crime, and if people really believe everything they read, hear and watch.

We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We鈥檙e planning to run these modules in the academic year 2026/27. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum.

We鈥檒l make sure to let you know of any material changes to modules at the earliest opportunity.
