Immigration and the Liberal State (L2097)

Spring teaching

On this module, you’ll examine the politics of immigration in liberal states across Europe and North America. You’ll explore the contradiction of immigration policies that can be both open and restrictive towards newcomers.

Key topics include:

  • how representative democracy, constitutionalism, capitalism and nationhood shape immigration policy
  • the paradoxes in immigration policies
  • the actors, institutions and norms that shape immigration politics
  • recent trends in immigration, citizenship and integration policies in countries that receive migrants.

We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We鈥檙e planning to run these modules in the academic year 2026/27.
