Over half of the world’s population lives in cities. By 2050, this is projected to rise to more than two-thirds, with much of that growth in cities in Africa and Asia.

Cities are the ideal place to explore the dynamic geographies of how people live together in an increasingly connected world. On this module, you’ll examine social, cultural and urban geographies, alongside migration and mobility studies. You’ll explore city lives, politics and the cultural diversity inherent to many urban spaces.

You’ll examine how factors such as class, ethnicity, political affiliation, religion, gender, location and age shape the way people interpret and experience cities.

You’ll also investigate how urban places and spaces are shaped by:

colonial and postcolonial histories
global neo-liberalism
resistance movements
residents’ everyday lives.

We’ll debate topical urban issues and explore a range of methods and theoretical approaches for understanding geographies of cities and mobilities.

We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2026/27. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum.
