Autumn and spring teaching

On this module, you’ll be introduced to the legal rules governing the acquisition and transfer of private rights in land. You’ll cover aspects of the law which form the framework of landholding in England, and situates these rules in social, economic and environmental context.

Topics may include:

• the doctrines of estates and tenure
• definitions of “land” and “property”
• transfer of rights in land, and the role of equity and the trust
• land registration
• adverse possession
• leasehold estates
• rights in security
• third-party rights (easements, freehold covenants)
• co-ownership.

We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2026/27. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum.
