Criminal Law (M3068)

Autumn and spring teaching

On this module, you’ll be introduced to the structure and core elements of criminal liability. 

You’ll focus on:

• substantive criminal offences and defences
• statute and case law
• how substantive legal rules are applied.

You’ll explore:

• the extent to which offences and defences are clearly defined
• elements of the offence that are open to competing interpretations
• types of conduct that should be criminalised
• the circumstances in which individuals should be held criminally responsible for their actions.

We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2026/27. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum.

We’ll make sure to let you know of any material changes to modules at the earliest opportunity.
