Critical Reading and Writing for Sociologists (L4071)

15 credits, Level 4

Autumn teaching

This module gives you the chance to practice and reflect on reading and writing approaches, developing an excellent foundation for the rest of your degree.

You’ll read contemporary sociological work and take part in critical discussions with your peers. Alongside a variety of texts, you’ll focus on one book, reflecting on:

  • writing styles
  • constructions of arguments
  • evaluations of evidence.

You’ll also encounter examples of critical thinking techniques.

We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We鈥檙e planning to run these modules in the academic year 2026/27. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum.

We鈥檒l make sure to let you know of any material changes to modules at the earliest opportunity.
