On this module, you’ll explore how power operates in relation to law, society, the state, governance and rights.

You’ll draw on interdisciplinary approaches, including the:

  • legal
  • political
  • critical
  • social
  • feminist
  • postcolonial.

You’ll examine how power functions within modern states and interacts with global political, legal, cultural, gender and economic relations. You’ll consider both theoretical and historical accounts of:

  • legitimacy
  • democracy
  • globalisation
  • human rights.

Module learning outcomes

  • Understand the basic theoretical principles that apply to power, rights and the modern state.
  • Understand the core elements of legal, political, critical, social, feminist and postcolonial theory.
  • Develop arguments that apply a knowledge of theory to an analysis of power, rights and the modern state.
  • Analyse and examine contemporary problems related to power and governance.
