Module Outline
This module enables students to investigate specific dimensions of counselling within diverse and specialised contexts, including the potentially intersecting needs of children, adolescents, and young people, refugees, LGBTQ+, neurodiverse, and racially minoritised clients amongst others. In doing so students will explore strategies for handling crisis situations, including trauma responses. The module develops the research skills of students, including framing research questions, conducting literature-based research, applying research methodologies and evaluating ethical considerations. After identifying a focus for enquiry, students will critically evaluate policy, professional guidance and scholarship; draw evidence-based conclusions; and report on a project that contributes to contemporary understandings in a specialist area of counselling practice.
Full Module Description
This module enables students to investigate specific dimensions of counselling within diverse and specialised contexts, including the potentially intersecting needs of children, adolescents, and young people, refugees, LGBTQ+, neurodiverse, and racially minoritised clients amongst others. In doing so students will explore strategies for handling crisis situations, including trauma responses. Module learning outcomes
Critically analyse counselling approaches for diverse populations, demonstrating a systematic understanding of culturally competent practices, ethical considerations, and crisis interventions across diverse and specialist settings and community settings.
Conduct an independent enquiry by formulating a research question, critically reviewing relevant literature and scholarship, and applying appropriate methodologies and ethical frameworks to examine a contemporary counselling issue.
Synthesize and evaluate research findings, demonstrating conceptual and theoretical understandings of current debates, limitations of knowledge, and implications for practice, while effectively communicating conclusions to specialist and non-specialist audiences.
