Module Outline

This module explores the foundational counselling skills essential for fostering human flourishing, personal development with a strong focus on self-awareness, emotional resilience, and reflective practice. Students will examine the importance of self-awareness in counselling, understanding how personal values, biases, and experiences shape interpersonal interactions. The module also addresses strategies for managing the emotional impact of counselling, emphasising self-care, and professional boundaries. Through reflective journaling, peer support and guided supervision, students will develop essential skills for ethical and sustainable practice, ensuring they can work with others effectively while maintaining their own well-being in educational, social work, and mental health settings.

This module explores the foundational counselling skills essential for fostering human flourishing, personal development with a strong focus on self-awareness, emotional resilience, and reflective practice. Students will examine the importance of self-awareness in counselling, understanding how personal values, biases, and experiences shape interpersonal interactions. The module also addresses strategies for managing the emotional impact of counselling, emphasising self-care, and professional boundaries. Through reflective journaling, peer support and guided supervision, students will develop essential skills for ethical and sustainable practice, ensuring they can work with others effectively while maintaining their own well-being in educational, social work, and mental health settings.

Module learning outcomes

Critically reflect and evaluate the role of self-awareness in counselling, analysing how personal values, biases, and life experiences influence professional interactions, ethical decision-making, and interpersonal relationships.

Apply and assess strategies for managing the emotional impact of counselling, including self-care, and establishing professional boundaries, demonstrating their relevance to ethical practice in appropriate contexts.

Utilise reflective practice techniques, such as journaling and peer supervision, to critically analyse personal and professional development, proposing strategies to enhance resilience and effectiveness in supporting others.
