Module Outline

This module provides an introductory exploration of approaches to counselling including those stemming from humanistic and psychodynamic traditions. Students will examine the role of psychology in counselling, understanding how psychological theories inform therapeutic practice. Key mental health challenges, such as anxiety, depression, and trauma, will be discussed in relation to counselling interventions. The module also develops core communication skills, including active listening, empathy, and non-verbal communication, essential for building rapport and trust in professional relationships. Through practical exercises and case studies, students will gain foundational skills relevant to supportive roles in education, youth work, and mental health settings.

Module learning outcomes

Demonstrate knowledge of key counselling approaches (person-centred, cognitive-behavioural, and psychodynamic) and evaluate their application in understanding and addressing common mental health challenges such as anxiety, depression, and trauma.

Apply core communication and interpersonal skills, including active listening, empathy, and non-verbal communication, to build rapport and trust in professional relationships, reflecting on their effectiveness through case studies and practical exercises. 

Analyse the role of different theories in counselling, interpreting and evaluating their contribution to different therapeutic approaches and interventions in education, youth work, and mental health settings.
