Module Outline
Dive deep into the captivating world of gangs and their culture with this module, designed to challenge your perceptions and broaden your understanding of group-based violence and crime. From street gangs to organised networks, you’ll explore how and why gangs emerge, operate, and evolve. Key topics include the role of social bonds, status, aesthetics and power dynamics in gang membership, as well as how identity and belonging are constructed in marginalised communities. Engaging in seminars and debates will challenge you to consider how gangs reflect broader societal inequalities and cultural norms. You’ll examine real-world case studies on a global level, engage with contemporary criminological, sociological, socio-legal/politics research, and critically analyse key issues.
Module learning outcomes
Demonstrate knowledge and critical understanding of empirical research and competing theories of OCGs
Develop a critical awareness of the broad social, cultural, economic and political aspects surrounding the formation of organised crime
Identify the complex issues of organised crime and related policies at the local and international levels, as well as their implementation and critical evaluation
Demonstrate the ability to independently select, define, research and construct a case study by applying and evaluating specified theory and/or concepts
