Module Outline

This module explores the concepts and practices of working with queer archives. It examines how LGBTQ+ histories are preserved, interpreted, and shared, with a particular emphasis on community-led approaches that prioritise the co-creation and co-production of queer primary sources, collections and archives. Using Brighton as a key case study, students will engage with both physical and digital archives to investigate how queer narratives are constructed, contested, and celebrated. The distinction between physical and digital sources will prompt critical reflection on the complexities of representing queer identities and experiences online, including issues of visibility, access, and digital preservation. Students will develop practical skills in archival research and heritage interpretation, while also considering ethical and political dimensions of queer archives and the primary sources contained therein. The module encourages students to think critically and creatively about how archives can be a tool for activism, memory-making, and community empowerment.
