Module Outline

The dissertation represents the culmination of your History degree – an opportunity to become a confident, practising historian through independent research on a subject that truly matters to you. The year-long module allows you to choose your own topic or project, to develop original research questions, and to craft an extended piece of work based on your own intellectual passions.

Your project may take various forms: a piece of traditional academic history writing; a creative public-facing project; or an innovative digital presentation. All of these, however, will be grounded on fundamental research in primary sources. Throughout this journey, you’ll receive dedicated one-to-one supervision from among the History Department’s faculty, alongside hands-on sessions exploring research methodologies, knowledge management, research ethics, and project development. We’ll provide comprehensive support through targeted study skills sessions and archival training both at Sussex and beyond.

This module cements your journey from student to historian, and is often the achievement that graduates remember most proudly from their university experience.
