Module Outline
In today's image-driven world, visuals play a significant role in shaping societal understandings of war. In the module, you will examine how war is represented in media and culture. Further, you will explore how these representations shape how societies make, know and experience war. We will approach this through engagement with diverse global sites and visual media such as art, photography, museums, and monuments.
In the module, you will develop skills in researching and analysing visuals, media and culture, with an emphasis on international relations. Through placing visual images and artefacts into focus, you will gain insights into the global politics of the image in ways that will enable you to critically evaluate representations of war and insecurity.
Key questions addressed in this module include:
• How is war represented in visual media?
• What is the relationship between war, security, and visuality?
• How do visuals shape how war is made, known and experienced?
Module learning outcomes
Develop a systematic understanding of the role of images, media and culture in shaping war.
Develop a detailed conceptual understanding of different approaches to evaluating the relationship between war, image, media and culture.
Effectively synthesise and communicate the uncertainties, ambiguities and limits of conceptual approaches to the study of war, image, media and culture.
Apply the conceptual approaches in the module to research and analysis of visual images, media and culture.
