Module Outline
Why is war and conflict endemic in the Middle East? Why are there so many authoritarian states in the Middle East? What is the relation between Islam and politics? How do Middle Eastern women challenge gender hierarchy?
This module examines modern politics and society in the Middle East through a perspective that is sensitive to international, social, and political dynamics.
You will:
• critically survey main theoretical approaches to Middle East politics;
• examine the historical and international dynamics and outcomes of modern state-formation in the region; and
• conduct an in-depth analysis of the Kurdish Question, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and the Iranian Revolution.
Module learning outcomes
Familiarity with the basic theoretical, conceptual, and normative issues involved in the study of the modern poltics and history of the Middle East.
Sensitivity to historical, political and cultural specificities of the Middle East and their interactive development within the wider context of international relations.
Articulating theoretically-informed, historically-grounded, and empirically-supported arguments on the main aspects of modern Middle Eastern politics and society.
Acquiring a sound knowledge of the historical and international dimensions of the contemporary social and (geo)political structures and processes in the Middle East.
